Biography of Venerable Sayadaw Badhanta Kawvida

Venerable Sayadaw Badhanta Kawvida (Sasana membership no. 12/ma.ya.ka{tha}000679) is the eldest son of U Pway and Daw Hla Chai of Shan Ywa village, Thazi District in Mandalay Division. He was born on Monday, the 8th day of the Waning moon of the month of Waso, 1310 B.E. (June 28, 1948).


1957 - when he was nine years old the Sayadaw became a young samane at Shan Ywa village. At the age of fifteen studied the basic Pariyatti Pali scriptures under the tutelage of Sayadaw Badhanta Pandava at Kan Myint Tawya Monastery, Pyawbwe and also at Shweinn Yeiktha Monastery, Tatkone. At seventeen in 1965, he moved to Meikhtila and studied under the tutelage of Sayadaw Badhanta Panñasami to prepare for the Pali Pathamabyan (preliminary examinations on knowledge of Pali scriptures).

1965 - Passed the basic examination.

1966 – Passed the intermediate examination.

1967 – Passed the advance examination. 1968 - though still a samane, he finished the Silakhan and Athalini Pali texts in the Dhammacariya examinations held by the state. The same year he became the assistant of Sayadaw Badhanta Panñasami on tutoring the students who were preparing for the basic Pali examinations.

1967 - On the morning of November 18 at 8 o’clock, he accepted the paccaya nuggaha (four requisites) from his parents he took the vows of rahan (monkhood) at Hse-lay Monastery at Shan Ywa village, and his preceptor was the Chauksutaung Tawya abbot.

1969 - While presiding in the Panñaramika Myo-Oo Monastery, he succeeded in the state organized Dhammacariya examinations and was conferred the title “Sasana Dhaza Dhammacariya.”

1971 he succeeded the Dhammacariya honors course under Sayadaw Badhanta Sucarita at Oboe Monastery, Dedaye, Ayeyarwaddy Division and was conferred the title “Sasana Dhazasiripavara Dhammacariya.” Continuing his studies under the Sayadaw he entered the state organized Tipitakadhara examination and obtained:

1972 - “Vinayadhara” title.

1974 - “Vinayakawvida” title, monthly stipend from the government, and transport pass for upper class rail or steamer, good for two persons.

1975 - Succeeded in the Tipitakadhara examination on the first five texts of the Abhidhamma Pali and was awarded a diploma.

1980 – From June onwards, took the post of taik-ôk (administrative officer in a monastery or nunnery) and mentor at Kan-Oo Jetavana Buddhist Seminary, Shwe Hninzi Road, Mayangone Township, Rangoon Division.

1981 – Besides teaching and administrating, traveled to many places and expounded the Dhamma.

1991 Dec – 1993 Dec. Invited by the lay Buddhist congregation of Chicago, and worked diligently in spreading the Dhamma.

1994 – 1997 May, preceptor to over 160 novices as well as expounded the Dhamma. Invited by Burma America Buddhist Association, Came to preside as abbot at Mingala Yama Monastery, 1708 Powder Mill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland 20903.

The Sayadaw had served as township vinayadhara, chairman, secretary of the Supervisory Council for examinations on the Pali Canon, administrator, and abbot. Currently he is continuing the spread of Dhamma at Buddha Dhamma Sangha Association, Aung Yadana Monastery, 4910, Brookeville Road, Maryland 20833.
